Successful Conclusion of Indo-Thai Military Exercise

Guwahati, Sept 14: The 14th edition of the Indo-Thai joint military exercise, known as 'Maitree', wrapped up in the Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya on Sunday, enhancing operational collaboration and strengthening defense relations between India and Thailand.

This two-week exercise, conducted under the auspices of the United Nations, culminated in an intensive 48-hour validation phase. During this phase, both military contingents undertook complex operations, which included setting up a temporary operating base, establishing an intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) grid, isolating villages, conducting heliborne operations, and executing raids and hostage rescue missions.

The exercise showcased the latest generation of equipment utilized by both armies, providing hands-on experience in applying modern technology in combat situations.

Defense officials noted that this joint training offered significant insights into counter-terrorism strategies, peacekeeping operations, intelligence sharing, and battlefield coordination.

The closing ceremony recognized exemplary soldiers and featured cultural performances that highlighted the martial and artistic heritage of both nations. Additionally, friendly competitions in volleyball, basketball, and tug-of-war fostered camaraderie among the troops.

A senior officer from the Indian Army characterized the exercise as a remarkable success and a pivotal moment in nurturing friendly relations between the two countries. He emphasized that it not only enhanced understanding and interoperability between the armies but also solidified the bond between India and Thailand.

Initiated in 2006, the Maitree series has become a fundamental aspect of defense cooperation between India and Thailand, promoting trust, mutual respect, and preparedness for collaborative operations in future multinational missions.

This latest edition further strengthens bilateral defense ties and underscores the shared commitment of both armies to maintain peace, stability, and security in the region.

The previous iteration of this exercise took place at Fort Vachiraprakan in Tak Province, Thailand.
